TUTORING SERVICES
Life for a college student revolves around classes. When you are not in lecture, you are planning your time to complete all class work, studying for upcoming exams, and working on assignments. Attending college full-time should be treated the same a full-time job, your primary focus should be on preparing yourself for each and every class. Some classes may be easier to comprehend than others, which is where seeking tutoring is an incredibly useful resource to utilize. Here at Illinois State, there are bountiful tutoring resources out there, which come free of charge to students. At the Julia N. Visor Academic Center, located in the basement of the Hewett-Manchester dorms on the ISU campus, provides tutoring for each and every class offered to undergraduate students. These tutoring sessions are led by current ISU students who have taken and passed the course being covered successfully and are happy to help answer any questions that may exist. My freshman year when I began taking Accounting classes I signed up to receive additional help and found the services incredibly useful and accredit my success in the course to my attendance in these tutoring sessions. There is no reason to struggle in class when tutoring services are provided at your convenience. The class is only going to continue to build upon itself, seeking help after the first sign of struggle will allow you to better understand the concepts at question and thus receive a higher final grade in the course.
JOB-PLACEMENT SERVICES
We attend college in order to acquire a well-paying job in our field of expertise following graduation. This is our primary goal, and is also a huge focus of the university as well. Being able to place a large percentage of your graduates with a full-time job after graduation reflects positively upon the college, while a college's inefficiency at placing their students with full-time jobs will provide a poor representation. The career center at Illinois State University does a terrific job at providing opportunities for students to become noticed by company recruiters. This is done through the utilization of part-time, internship, and career fairs which showcase companies interested in hiring college students during or after their time spent in schooling. This alone is an incredible resource, however is only scratching the surface as to what other services are provided as well. In addition to career fairs, Illinois State also utilizes other recruiting ventures, including on-campus interviews, job application services, which can be found on the career center website, and many others as well. The more one puts into finding a job the greater ones chances of being employed become. Illinois State provides many opportunities to be noticed by company recruiters, and depends greatly on individuals own drive to become employed that is the major deciding factor.
COUNSELING SERVICES
Academic counselors are there for you every step you take through your undergrad/graduate career. They help you keep organized with what required classes you still have remaining, provide advice in relation to what classes may prove beneficial to take given your particular major, and aim to make your collegiate career as smooth as possible. I have had the same counselor for my major and year after year she has steered me in a positive direction. I sought out the expertise from my counselor in regards to any question that arose about my major. With such a busy schedule, my counselor made things incredibly clear and concise. I would not be where I am today academically if it had not been for the incredible help from my counselor, and for that I am incredibly grateful. Seeking guidance from your counselor is a necessity especially during course registration. Use this resource to your advantage, and your collegiate performance will soar to new heights.
Although I only focused upon three types of services offered to college students, especially here at Illinois State, there are quite a few in which I did not discuss. Colleges will go the extra mile to ensure your time spent enrolled in courses is as smooth and efficient as possible. Universities focus on keeping students enrolled, thus maximizing the amount of revenue they are able to obtain. So, by providing these services to make your collegiate experiences as positive as possible, they are hoping to create a multi-year, mutually beneficial relationship. Illinois State has made my time spent enrolled incredibly enjoyable, and will be saddened on graduation day as I depart on to a full-time job in the real world.
